RTF
RTF stands for Rhizomatous Tall Fescue , a new generation of tall fescue bred by Barenbrug Research, which, when included in a turf seedmix brings a whole new set of benefits to the groundsman, landscaper or gardener.
As our climate and our way of life changes, more and more demands are being made of our sportsfields and lawns. Gardens are generally smaller, with higher fences, which ultimately mean they are much shadier. People expect grass to remain green all year round, whatever it may be subjected to. if the RHS prediction is correct, changes to our weather will mean that the traditional English lawn grasses will find life very difficult indeed.
That's where Festuca arundinacea (tall fescue) comes into play. It keeps its colour all year round, will withstand heavy wear, grows well in partial shade, tolerates drought and will stand periods of water logging. Tall fescue roots can go down as far as 1.5 metres into the soil – ideal for stabilization and because of this, the plant has low nutrient and water requirements which makes it perfect for environmentally sustainable situations. The old fashioned cultivars tend be course-leaved and clump forming and only really suitable for forage but Barenbrug's new cultivars have some rather interesting characteristics.
Firstly, they are relatively fine leaved compared to their old fashioned cousins. They will withstand mowing down to as little as 12mm and have a low build up of thatch, but more importantly with RTF there is the added ability to reproduce via rhizomes.
A rhizome looks a bit like a thick, fleshy root, but it is in fact an underground stem that has buds on it. These buds mean that the rhizome can send a shoot up to the soil surface while extending new roots downwards to produce a whole new plant, (a bit like a strawberry runner). From the end-users point of view, this means a strong, easy to handle turf roll, which establishes fast to form a dense lawn/playing surface, which is quick to repair itself when damaged.
Q Lawns' RTF turf is grown on the Company's trade mark black soil. Included in the seed mix is a percentage of smooth stalked meadow grass, which is another drought tolerant, wear resistant grass and so the final product will be ideally suited to a wide range of applications including sports fields, race courses, parks, gardens, children's play areas and general landscaping.
We suggest you purchase grass seed containing woodland grasses like Tufted hairgrass or use RTF turf.

What the trade call a fescue bent mix - is used for bowling and putting greens. It requires a high input of management and not commonly used for domestic lawns. It is not available from Q Lawns in the Midlands

Grass is quite difficult to kill, once the turf has rooted, it is then a lawn, responsibility back to the grower would be difficult to establish. You must remember that when turf is harvested, most of its root system is chopped off; it is also rolled up and deprived of daylight. Turf in this state, starved of its vital life support system, soon becomes stressed and is prone to ill health. Most problems stem from leaving turf rolled up too long or not giving the new lawn enough water in the first two weeks. Happily though 99.9% of turf establishes into lawns to be proud of.
Most certainly YES, failure to lay and water turf immediately will result in the turf going yellow, putting un-necessary stress on the plant.
Depends on your garden size, turf must be kept moist, but not saturated, any signs of shrinkage, water immediately. We advise using hosepipe and an oscillating sprinkler to apply water. If you are considering a using a watering can, think again. Obviously turf laid in autumn, winter and early spring will generally be far easier to manage with natural rainfall.

Enviromat
What is the best time of year to install Enviromat?
Enviromat call be installed at any time of year and in any weather except frost and snow. Points to bear in mind though to get the best out of your Enviromat are:
- If you are buying in rolls, they must be unfurled within 8 hours of delivery (sooner in hot weather!) otherwise the plants will start to die.
- For the plants to settle themselves properly in their new home, Enviromat will need to be watered every day for at least 2 weeks after installation. In high summer, they will probably appreciate being watered twice a day.
- Enviromat is mown on the production fields to speed up growth and to minimise damage to the plants when they are in transit. You will increase the chances of your Enviromat flowering in its first season if you install it in September/October, let it overwinter and then apply a slow-release fertilizer in late March or early April.
You can walk on Enviromat, but only very occasionally. It certainly won't stand up to a game of football or a garden party. If you are considering using Enviromat as groundcover, perhaps as an ornamental “lawn”, including stepping stones or a path in your design will help save wear and tear on the plants.
Unfortunately, no. Sedum plants are specially adapted to live in exposed sites – mountainsides, moors, seashores etc; to avoid losing water from their leaves, they have developed a biological system for themselves that we call CAM (Crassulacean Acidic Metabolism). For CAM to work properly the plants need to feel a distinctive temperature difference between night and day – that doesn't happen in the shade and so the plants struggle to survive.
Enviromat is a super way of making an unusual centre piece for the dinner table, a Christmas wreath or a living sculpture but it will only be happy indoors for very short periods of time – three to four days at the most. After that the plants begin to get pale and “leggy”.
All of the sedum species in Enviromat are frost hardy in the British Isles ; Quite often frost will stimulate the leaves to take on an attractive burgundy red colour – another aspect to Enviromat's all year round interest, and a white haw frost accentuates the different shapes, sizes and textures of the leaves and looks absolutely delightful.
Enviromat certainly seems to tolerate the salty air at the seaside and it doesn't mind being in exposed situations so yes, Enviromat sedum matting is suitable for a seaside garden,
No, sedums are totally non-toxic; in fact our ancestors often used sedums to make medicines. The leaves and stems of sedum plants taste bitter too, so there's no need to worry about children or animals eating them, they're just not appetizing enough!

Different plants need different balances of plant nutrients, depending on where in the world they first developed and what you want the plant to do for you. For example, sedum plants are adapted to living on really thin soils where there are hardly any nutrients – they don't need much fertilser at all. Tomato plants like lots of food, but too a high nitrogen fertilizer will mean you get loads of leaves and no fruit. NutriFusion has been specially formulated for lawns, it's unlikely to damage other plants but it might not bring you the results you were hoping for.
NutriFusion contains nothing at all that has been derived from animals so there's no risk of it bringing in any pests or diseases. Chicken Manure can contain quite a high level of ammonia that can unleash some very unpleasant gases that not only smell nasty but that can irritate eyes and airways. Usually, with Chicken Manure you are buying quite a high percentage of sawdust.
